Rave Reviews for 2010 Games First Two Test Events

The first two test events in preparation for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games kicked off with spirited competition and rave reviews for the Kentucky Horse Park’s new indoor arena.

Reiner Aaron Ralston (Team USA), made history as the first athlete to compete in the arena.

“After my ride, it really started to sink in. It is so special to be a part of something as big as these preparations for the 2010 Games,” he said. “To be on this team with these athletes—it’s all bigger than just me.”

2006 WEG Vaulting Gold Medalist, Megan Benjamin said of the vaulting circle, “it’s the best vaulting footing in the world.”

The competition ran smoothly for both reining and vaulting and the facility preparation received high scores from both disciplines.
Official attendance for the Kentucky Cup Reining Individual Finals, the night of July 23, reached 2,512.  More than 2,200 people attended the Kentucky Cup Vaulting or watched the online streaming video. More than 300 volunteers helped the staff produce this competition, the first two of seven test events planned to prepare for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

“This facility certainly has a very international feel, and we’re looking forward to 2010,” said Kenny Geisler, winner of the Kentucky Cup Vaulting CVI 2* Individual Male competition. “We couldn’t ask for more to be fully prepared for next year.”

World Gets Taste of Kentucky at Alltech FEI European Championships

This summer, Kentucky will be showcased to as many as 60,000 spectators at the Alltech FEI European Championships. An Alltech Kentucky Village will entreat its visitors to journey through the Bluegrass in 2010 by providing them with a literal taste of Kentucky as they enjoy the culinary delights, sights, and sounds of the Commonwealth. The experience will be further enhanced by a sneak preview of the excitement as a special Alltech World Equestrian Games Gala Night on August 28th features bluegrass music and demonstrations of the eight FEI disciplines that will comprise the Alltech FEI Games.

Advanced Diagnostics for Lameness Evaluation
Dr. Katie Garrett
Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital

As equine veterinarians, we are fortunate to have a wide variety of diagnostic imaging modalities at our disposal to assist with diagnosis of our patients' problems.  Each modality has particular strengths and weaknesses and sometimes a combination of a few techniques is necessary to arrive at a correct diagnosis and to direct further treatment.  Radiography and ultrasound can often be performed on an ambulatory basis, but modalities such as nuclear scintigraphy, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography generally require a referral hospital setting.

Radiographs have been a mainstay of equine diagnostic imaging for quite some time and are useful to diagnose conditions such as osteoarthritis, osteochondrosis, and fractures.  Digital radiographs have been available in the hospital setting for over a decade, but they have become widely available on an ambulatory basis as well over the last few years.  This technology not only allows the veterinarian to produce a higher quality image in the field, but a preliminary diagnosis can often be made immediately horse-side.  This feature is particularly advantageous when the results of the radiographs significantly impact how the veterinarian chooses to manage the case.  The cervical spine and upper extremity regions can be difficult to radiograph with standard cassettes, but with the advent of portable digital radiography, we are often able to obtain radiographs of these regions on a farm instead of needing to refer the patient to a hospital.
